Snobby Literary Jokes

I love a good witty literary allusion. So today, while I was sitting in my classroom sipping iced coffee and listening to Nicki Minaj (covertly), I laughed out loud several times while grading my students’ projects. Quick version of a very lengthy, complex project: in their writing groups, they created academic journals in which they traced a theme through different movements of American literature. As a final design requirement, they had to have five advertisements that were connected to their themes or movements in some clever way. Here are some of my favorites:
-“Still down from World War II and the Holocaust? Can’t get over the fact that it’s been over 50 years and humanity has more important things to think about? Maybe it’s time to join the Modernist Therapy Group!”
-“Do you wish to live with nature because you’re disappointed with the corruption of society and the conformist way of life? Now you can with the Transcendentalist Kit!”
-(Reference to Eliot’s “Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”) “Hero Juice: tired of being a coward? Tired of your wife complaining you aren’t ‘man enough’? Tired of your bald head? Worried about eating that peach? Your knobby knees? Still worried about approaching the woman of your dreams? Want the mermaids to sing to you (before the human voices wake you and you drown?) Then buy Hero Juice!”
